Lesson ONE

This was my first art lesson, conducted live from my family’s Georgia cabin. Though painting played a large role in the Renaissance, I decided to study chiaroscuro (the contrast between dark and light) using graphite and charcoal. Our goal was to break up this portrait into bite-sized portions, starting with the eyes and ending with the ears.

EYES

Here’s my rendition of her eye! While working, I learned a lot of new tricks and techniques to use when approaching realism. They were really helpful to me, especially since I hadn’t done much realism in the past. I used a trusty no.2 pencil for this one because I was a little nervous to pick up charcoal, but I’ll get used to it later. Portraiture can be very intimidating, especially if you don’t know where to start, so I found dividing each feature into individual lessons to be helpful.
